Writing for Jezebel. Also, let’s Discuss some Things. Like, Zoophilia.

9thApr. × ’12

Oh hiiii. So, okay, I am writing over at Jezebel!

Here are some things I’ve written so far, which you should definitely click on and read and enjoy:

I would love to talk with you guys about these topics. I mean, I had to think about whether not I consider bestiality to be wrong. Which was strangely, kinda hard.

Zoophilia (or bestiality if you’re nasty?) is — I think safe to say — considered an act of sexual deviance. Just, you know, one of the worst things human being can do sexually. No big deal. But we have solid reasoning. Animals can’t consent, and sex positivity worships at the altar of consent; consent is our idea of what healthy sexuality looks like.

And yet strangely, the female bestisexual seems pretty accepted by the Redditors. One commenter says, “I just want to say you have my support. Rock on, freaky girl. We need more people like you.”

Not to get all Pervy Carrie Bradshaw on you guys, but reading the thread, I couldn’t help but wonder: What would the response have been if she were a guy?

So, this was–oddly–hard because I don’t think fantasy is wrong, necessarily. And also, there is the whole eating meat thing. Right? I implored you guys on twitter and one woman sent me her snake fantasies. She wrote: “ A woman fucking a carpet python? Erotic. I read Emmanuelle and remember a scene where a stripper fucks a white python. To my mind, bestiality is purely women being fucked by male animals, or phallic shaped animals, while if a man fucks an animal, that’s just sex, or more likely, rape.”

I get what she is saying about the fantasy thing. And hearing her describe it doesn’t even seem that creepy. But again– the whole acting on it thing? Total-no-go.

Also–interesting about bestiality being considered morally okay with laaaaydies, no? This is what I found so strange about the Reddit thing. With Reddit, I wrote it off as a part of their sexist-culture. But maybe idea is more pervasive than I thought…

Okay, so follow me on twitter to keep up with what I am writing over at Jezebel–and also, don’t worry this blog isn’t going anywhere.

Now anyone want to discuss sex-with-animal fetishes?  I realize I used a photo of a cat in this post. For that, I apologize

Here’s an interesting analysis of the different “kinds” of bestiality: http://www.depauw.edu/humanimalia/issue02/pdfs/Grebowicz.pdf

Ok, the cat in this post looks SO ALARMED. It’s cracking me up. I guess I can’t really relate to being sexually attracted to animals… yet what about Bugs Bunny playing the sexy girl bunny? Or furries? What about being a kid and seeing a sexualized drawing of a cartoon character and being kindof grossed out and titillated all at once? There seems to be a spectrum from fantasy characters, to fantasizing about animals, then actual sexual acts with actual animals. I think the ability to differentiate between fantasy and what’s realistically a good idea is pretty important … and I just feel like actual sex acts with actual animals is kindof a bad idea. Poor kitty.

Egaliede, oh wow that link is really interesting, especially the bit about gendering the animals… I would imagine that argument would extend to veganism though, no? I mean that is the reason I had such a hard time with this, I do eat meat.

Mary, Hahaha I love that cat!!! So interesting about the cartoon cat. I think the furry and anthropomorphism thing is totally different beast though (excuse the choice of word.) I men because furries are all about imagining themselves as these fantasy creatures… which strikes me of very different as actually wanting to fuck animals. And yes you are right, it is all about the difference between fantasy and reality. Also for the record, and because I am an over-share machine, sometimes I refer to my cat as sexy. Like I will be like, hey cat, you are lookin kinda sexy? Cause he is all loungey and slinky. Still, I don’t want to boff him. But he is sensual in his own cat way.

Damn, Rach. You want us to talk about being attracted to minors, and now you’re asking us to talk about wanting to do naughty stuff with animals? You’re just trying to get us in trouble.

I just couldn’t be attracted to an animal physically nor mentally. The things I’m attracted to in women aren’t there when I think about animals. Basically, looking at animals doesn’t get me hard. And it’s not like I’m having long conversations with them during which I become attracted to them beyond physically. So, I suppose the only thing that’s left is using an animal in a way one would use a sex toy. Like, I could watch porn while using your sexy cat as an object to get myself off. But even that doesn’t seem fun. I believe it would also be extremely uncomfortable and frustrating.

Also, the logistics of it are too confusing and unpleasant to figure out. I don’t have enough ambition to imagine how to have pleasurable sexy times with that cat in the picture. Maybe I’m just lazy…

Now, as someone that studies animals I find that the distinction between ‘beast’ animals and ‘person’ animals to be exceedingly flawed and goes back into outdated and ridiculous ideas of humans being imbued with intelligence whereas other animals are not, or souls, whereas other animals or not , as if these qualities are tangible and easily monitored…when they are not.

Given this, there is no reason to place, for example, a dog, in the category of ‘beast’, or ‘non-person, and a human as a ‘person’.

However, I could see the argument that other animals could be considered a form of ‘minor’; a being not assumed to be fully capable of responsibility, and as such, I think sex with animals is to be considered a similar issue to sex with under-aged people; it isn’t necessarily /wrong/, there isn’t a ‘right age’ where you suddenly become capable of having sex, or a right species.

However, I think age of consent and uh ‘species consent’ laws should continue to make children/adolescents and non-humans ‘off limits’, if the criteria for a crime started depending on, for example, the judge’s opinion, the country would be much less safer place.

Hmmm. I may be getting all academic-nerdy here, but: The male vs. female bestiality comparison is interesting. I mean, like mytho-religiously, women have more interaction with having sexy times with non human entities, whereas I’m hard pressed to find a male example. Like, in Ancient Greek myth a lot…even like Yeat’s “Leda and the Swan”. So maybe, because of all these stories, we’re less likely to see it as an invasion of the animal, and more of like the animal as stand-in for something else? Not sure, just throwing it out there.

Go down on me. He of course says he thinks the dog as we’ll as
I would enjoy it. Is that considered beastialty?

I was just thinking about this yesterday! I was going through Stoya’s blog (http://stoya.tumblr.com) where she talked about a Japanese “pornographer” who took lots of photos of girls with animals (mostly aquatic…) and made a video in which he used his pet dog to lick out a girl. Then the dog got really sick because it ingested too much condensed milk. My big problem with bestiality is the animals abuse side. This may sound ignorant but I really don’t see any “nice” people being a part of this…it just seems so wrong. The people involved in making animal porn probably don’t care very much about the animals wellbeing and they probably do get sick or injured in the process. Can’t change my mind about this issue, just feels really cruel and irresponsible.

OH MY GOD I AM SO GLAD WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS. Also, is that weird? Okay, whatever.

BK: lol you are right, I am tackling the darkest stuff here. What should I do next? Scatophilia? Other forms of edge play? I mean what is worse??!

Dingi, interesting viewpoint, re: beast and animals. What are your views on eating meat, I have to wonder?

Tash, yeah I think it is truly that we don’t see female sexuality as aggressive or something to be feared. It is seen as passive. So I think in a way, it is almost viewed as the animal being the aggressor toward the female. Very strange and sexist.

Healthnut, Uhm. Yes. I am not sure why I approved this comment? I mean I want to foster conversation? But, yes! That is bestiality.

Georgie, I know I totally agree. And yet, again with the meat thing. We also know animals are widely mistreated in most industrial farming situations. Sigh.

I’m not a zoophiliac or anything but I think people don’t really know what they’re talking about in regards to this. Why do we assume that animals can’t give consent? And if a dog can’t give consent to a person then can it give consent to another dog? Or how do we determine if the dog is giving consent to the other dog? Or should we start locking dogs away in the pound for raping other dogs that hadn’t given their consent. If you say an animal can’t give consent because it’s unnatural for a human and animal to be sexual together what is that based on? Because a dog and human can’t procreate so it’s therefore unnatural? Therefore wouldn’t it also be unnatural for two male monkeys to be sexual together? Or two female monkeys together? Or two male humans? Wouldn’t that all be considered unnatural? The real question here is the assumption that animals can’t give consent and it is therefore wrong. We really have no idea what an animal consents to or doesn’t consent to, even within their own species. Does a dog even consent to being forced to wear a collar or be walked on a leash instead of running free like they would naturally? Or would you say that since a dog doesn’t seem to mind being walked on a leash it’s okay? Well what if the dog doesn’t seem to mind having sex with that girl or licking that penis? Is it therefore okay? All I’m saying is that we are all too ignorant to really know what’s going on in an animal’s mind and therefore saying that sex with animals is right or wrong and judging it is just a result of our societal upbringing and taboos and that we actually do not know and can’t really know so we should not make those judgments.
